Dr. Alexandra (Alex) Oliveira has over 20 years of professional experience in seafood processing, quality and safety.
Alex joined the Monell Chemical Senses Center (University of Pennsylvania) in 2001 as Post-Doctoral Fellow in analytical organic chemistry, and soon became Assistant Prof. of Seafood Chemistry at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (Kodiak Center). She spent the following 13 years of her career at UAF, where she led a dynamic research program in the area of seafood science and technology. During her tenure she conducted research in more than 25 projects, and published more than 50 peer-reviewed research articles, several book chapters and many other publications addressing diverse technical aspects of fish and shellfish products. Following her departure from UAF she continues to have Affiliate Faculty status with the School of Fisheries and Ocean Science.
Since 2009, Alex has served as Alaska’s Representative for the Pacific Fisheries TechnologistsAssociation , and is a member of the Institute of Food Technology, where she has held positions on numerous committees. She is an AFDO certified HACCP instructor, and a member of the cadre of instructors of the University of Maryland and FDA’s Joint Institute of Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN) international education programs in seafood safety.
A native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Alex earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Chemistry, and a Master of Science in Organic Chemistry. In 2000 she completed the Dept. of Food Science and Human Nutrition Ph.D. Program at University of Florida, where she studied quality aspects of Gulf of Mexico sturgeon.
